Main Features
Salar 40 Pilot House Ketch, brilliant offshore boat with serious cred.

Salar 40, Laurent Giles, 1979, Pilothouse offshore cruising ketch, Perkins 80 HP (rebuilt 2007), built by Tassie legend Bob Brinkman for Mick York of Sydney, Dame Pattie fame. 2 owner boat with impeccable history and clearly designed and built by experienced yachties who know what is needed for longer trips. Everything from the solid steel construction with ½ inch keel plates, to the stainless bulwarks & mast tabernacles and the oversized stainless swaged rigging have ‘tough’ written all over them. But don’t be fooled by the 13 tonne construction and offshore build, this boat averages a comfortable 6-7 knots and will push along at 9 knots under sail. Complete with spinnaker, furling genoa, spare headsails and battened main with 2 reef points she can be just as suitable running around the sticks as cruising the coast, running across the straight or for doing that dream trip to the pacific islands; all of which this boat has done several times both racing and cruising. Unlike any other Salar 40 this special build has an open bulkhead between the aft cabin and the main cabin, allowing access from inside the boat or via the cockpit and is configured as a 6 berth boat with 1 master double and two heads. (aft electric head has holding tank) As a cruising boat, the benefits of a pilot house are obvious, warm & comfortable no matter where you are, but also Mick is a tall bloke and had her built with extra headroom & longer berths and there are 16 opening hatches or portholes for brilliant ventilation. In keeping with the condition of this boat I could not find evidence of even one leak, no staining anywhere to the teak trim and no musty smells, nor could I see one lick of rust anywhere, she has been beautifully maintained. The decks are all foam insulated so it doesn’t get too hot down below and there is a boom awning for when you are in the tropics, along with clears and a storm cover for extra protection in foul weather while in the pilot house. The two massive primary headsail winches and main winch are located inside the pilot house, so short handed sailing is a breeze even when getting hammered, although the weighty steel construction soaks up every wave with barely a murmur and the clear view windscreen ensures perfect visibility. The mast set up includes 2 halyard winches and 1 on the mizzen, a decent traveller aft of the pilot house and long track cars enable multiple setups and the full length shoal draft keel will get you into all of the special anchorages. The reliable Perkins runs comfortably at 1200revs doing 7 knots and using 3 LPH, so with 1000 litres of diesel, she has a range of about Melbourne to Brisbane on one tank. 1000 litres of water and big eutectic fridge/freezer set up will keep you alive on the journey, while the Furuno GPS & Radar, Course master autopilot, VDO wind, speed & depth instruments and VHF radio will help you get there. Once you arrive, the electric anchor winch, all with chain and 3 anchors will look after you and then launch the inflatable from the rear removable davits , fire up the 3.3 HP Johnson and explore to your heart’s content or just go for a swim off the stern ladder. Cook up a feast in the spacious galley, complete with gas oven/ 4 burner stove, pots, pans, monogrammed crockery and storage space with everything in its place. Wash up with the heat exchange pressure hot water while listening to the C.D stereo and finish off the day up on deck nibbling on a cheese platter and a nice red on the two removable cockpit tables. A few other goodies worth mentioning include an 8 man liferaft (out of survey), lee cloths on every bunk, lazy jacks, sail covers, teak cockpit floor and hatch tops, stainless stanchions, pushpit, pulpits and lifelines, storage everywhere, shore power with battery charger, 3 brand new batteries, 3 bilge pumps, emergency steering tiller and a washing machine no less! Complete with tools, charts, crockery, cutlery, maintenance gear, paints etc.. This is a ‘walk on walk off’ proposition; a unique opportunity for someone to literally step on board and go sailing without the need to spend any extra money, right down to the 650 litres of diesel in the tanks. Everything works; not just the design and fit out, but literally everything, every light globe in every well placed light fitting, when you reach for every well placed switch! If you have the dream, check this boat out, you will be impressed!
